Duszejko, an eccentric vegetarian retired construction engineer and enthusiast astrologist, lives in a small mountain village on the Czech-Polish border. One day her beloved dogs disappear and cannot be found anywhere. A few months later on a snowy night, Duszejko's introvert neighbour stumbles upon the dead body of a poacher living nearby. The man's mysterious death is amplified by the only traces left around the house - marks of roe deer hooves. As time goes by, more grisly killings are discovered, the victims of which belonged to the local elite and were passionate hunters. Duszejko tries to convince the local police force that wild animals have committed the murders. As yet another body is found after the costume ball, Duszejko becomes the main suspect after being the last person to see the victim. Soon after and when the local parish house burns down, and the priest and chaplain of the local hunting association die in flames, the police have little doubt as to who did it.
